The production unit ''Mad Soldiers'', consisting of Daisuke Asakura and Kenichi Ito, worked with Kotani early on and amplified the beginnings of his career significantly. They released a mini-album called ''Mads Laboratory'' with him as the featured vocalist before Kotani released his solo singles. ''Mad Soldiers'' is also the backing band that performs the music in his earlier songs and performed with him in some of his live concerts. Kotani played Nagase Kenji in the J-Drama ''Love Story'' which aired from April 15, 2001 to June 24, 2001 in Japan.
